From ‘Presente.org Team’
“Dear friend,
Gaby, Carlos and Felipe need your help. These four brave students have been walking from Miami to Washington, D.C. to call for solutions to our failed immigration system, and for an end to deportations of students like them who would qualify under the DREAM Act.
Now, two U.S. Senators have come out with a letter urging the Obama administration to halt all deportations of undocumented ‘DREAM’ students. It’s a critical moment.
As the walkers approach their final destination in Washington, DC, we need to show President Obama that there is a wave of support behind this effort to stop student deportations – a first step toward real change in out immigration system. Will you add your voice and stand with them?”

Cookeville Monthly Meeting
Meeting for Worship with a Concern for Business
April 25, 2010
Attending: Bonita, Hector, Susie, Richard, Rose, Leith (clerking), and Ralph (recording).
Hector brought up the issue of the execution of Gaile K. Owens, who has been on death row since 1986 as accessory to the murder of her abusive husband. The Tennessee Supreme Court recently set the execution date for September 28 after denying a request to commute the sentence to life in prison. Only the governor has the power to stop the execution. (The governor’s wife is reputed to be a strong supporter of the death penalty).
The SAYMA Finance committee is planning their budget and asks: 1) do we estimate that our assessments and contributions for 2010 will be more, less, or about the same as 2009, and 2) do we estimate that our assessments and contributions for 2011 will be more, less, or about the same as 2010. The clerk will reply “about the same” to both questions.
SAYMA meets June 9-13 at Warren Wilson College. The theme is “Discerning the Way.” Go to http://www.sayma.org/YM2009/YM2009_Registration_Form.pdf, print and send the form with a check. Postmark must be by May 10; a $30 late fee will apply thereafter.
"Pendle Hill" . . . has many programs on Quaker faith, practice, and history each year. To help enable Friends to attend our weekends and short courses, we offer ‘matching scholarships’ – we may be able to match a grant from your meeting so that any amount from a few dollars up to the total cost of the program can be covered. We also offer ‘bring a friend discounts’ for some programs to two of more friends or family members who register together. Upcoming 2010 programs include:
May 21-23 – Clerking, with Deborah Fisch and Bill Deutsch
May 28-30 – The Practice of Simplicity, with Erin Rooney Doland
June 18-20 – Ranters and Early Friends: A Thin Gray Line, with Doug Gwyn
June 9-11 – Inquirers’ Weekend: An Introduction to Quakerism, with Trayce Peters on
and Greg Elliott”

Peace and Social Concerns Committee Meeting Minutes
From Susie via Hector
“Meeting with Putnam County Supt. of Schools”
“Hector reported on his meeting with Kathleen Airhart on April 14th. The National Peace Essay contest information was given to Kathleen Airhart. The general idea for most essays has been political solutions to crises in various areas of conflict like Kosovo, Bosnia, Uganda, etc. Kathleen will read the material and respond. She thought her English teachers would be interested. We will need to inform her of the 2010 subject and rules as the material available to her was from 2009.”
“In speaking about our Meeting's wish to have a Peace essay contest separate from the National contest with the subject being of a more spiritual nature, Kathleen asked that we write more specifically about what we would be looking for here. The Peace essay contest committee will be called together to work on this during the next weeks.”
Ivan Cordrey called Hector to say the Unitarian Universalists are renting a meeting place across 1st St. from the Chamber of Commerce. They would be willing to let the Cookeville Quakers meet there for the rent we are now paying the Wesley Foundation. Many questions: Would we have to change our meeting time? Would this possibly be a good thing? Would the kitchen facilities be adequate? Would there be space for our library? Could it and our literature be displayed? When would the building be open? Would we need to provide our own chairs, kitchen plates and silverware? When can we look at it? A committee of Leith, Bonita, and Hector will investigate. Hector (convener) will call Ivan.
